UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Denunciations of Scandals Threaten UN

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Denunciations of corruption, bribe, collection of bribes from refugees [1] and of sexual scandal involving the peacekeepers [2], [3] threaten the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

The gravest denunciations involve the aid project to Iraq, called Oil-for-Food. Grave denunciations of bribe exist, superfluous accounting and collaboration with the ex-dictator Saddam Hussein, against staff of the UN, companies and politicians of several countries. Even the secretary of the UN, Kofi Annan was suspicious of participation in the plan of corruption. And also grave doubts still hover about his son, Kojo Annan.

The gravity of the denunciations threatens not only the credibility of the UN, but its existence.

Secretary Kofi Annan said that he is going to promote reforms in the organization. [4]

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Internet Marketing How To Gain More Benefits From The Best Basic Home Based Businesses Of Origin}

Internet Marketing How to gain more benefits from the best basic Home based businesses of origin

by

Charles Michel

Make sure you are realistic when planning your home based business, if you can only work at it part-time, that is fine, just do not try doing everything at once, set yourself a couple of hours a day if you can, take your time and learn at your own pace. To be successful you are going to have to work hard, set yourself goals, be committed and determined, it’s a new business, no one said it was going to be easy.

A best home base business that is not turning a profit yet can be a trickier creature to handle. Giving up means that you are loosing the potential for a new income stream. It’s not always the right long term decision.

You must have some qualities or skills to be successful in your home business or anything for that matter. Hence please spend some time analyzing your strengths and weaknesses. You will want to capitalize on the former and minimize the affects of the latter. For example, if you are a good communicator or have a presentable personality, then you might want to handle public relations or customer support section of your business. If you are good with numbers and also possess knowledge of any accounting software, then you might become your own accountant and leave the communication part to someone else. Of course if you are good at more than one or two skills then nothing likes it, but always try to concentrate on your strengths and apply them in your business.

Hence a best home based business becomes an obvious choice for all those who want to work from home, become their own boss, and start a business with very little start up cost.

Car bomb in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico kills several, many injured

Saturday, July 17, 2010

A car bomb that exploded at about 20:00 MDT Thursday (01:00 Friday UTC) in a violent area of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico killed several people and injured more.

Police spokesman Jacinto Seguro said Friday that Mexican federal police received a call that an officer was dead. Seguro went on to say, “When they went to check the car, there was a dead body in there, dressed up like a police officer, but it wasn’t one of ours. They put him in a civilian car but dressed him up in a municipal police uniform. That’s when the bomb went off. It’s like an act of terrorism.”

Federal police spokesman Ramon Salinas said the blast killed two officers, a paramedic, and one civilian, although Mayor Jose Reyes said that only three died. At least six others were injured, although reports have said the total injured may be as high as sixteen. Four remain in the hospital, including three paramedics and one civilian.

Mexican authorities say it was a car bomb, but counter-terrorism experts are still unsure as to what caused the vehicle to explode. Intelligence expert Fred Burton said, “For this to be an improvised grenade attack, in some capacity, it doesn’t surprise me.”

The Juárez Cartel, one of the two drug-traffickers in the area, claimed responsibility for the bombing in a graffiti message. “We have more car bombs,” the graffiti said.

Ciudad Juárez has a history for trafficking drugs to the United States, especially into Texas.

Before the explosion, the police arrested a suspected leader of the Juarez cartel, Jesus Armando Acosta Guerrero.

This year more than 7,000 people have died as a result of drug-related violence in Mexico since this year began. Attorney General Arturo Chavez on Friday said nearly 25,000 people have died in the last three and a half year period.

Selecting The Best Type Of Company Name Or Product Name: Are Descriptive Names Superior?

By Marcia Yudkin

In her book Roadmap to Revenue, Kristin Zhivago argues against arbitrary or unusual names for products and companies, claiming that sales will always go up with a name that simply describes what is being sold.

“Just the other day I was trying to remember the name of a stock photo website I had used only once,” she writes. “It wasn’t an easy name to remember (such as StockPhoto.com). I tried to find it via Google. It was, as it turns out, ‘Veer.’ It wasn’t in the top 25 search results, and the name was so odd that it would have been easy to click on any other odd name, hoping it was the site I was looking for. StockPhoto.com has an advantage over Veer, right out of the gate. If you have a name like Veer, come up with a new name that is memorable and descriptive.”

I found Zhivago’s example surprising, since the following companies compete against one another with minuscule differences in their names:

StockPhoto.com

iStockPhoto.com

BigStockPhoto.com

eStockPhoto.com

AStockPhotos.com

OStockPhoto.com

MyStockPhoto.com

Looking at that list, are you certain you would remember correctly which of these you’d previously visited? I would definitely not be sure about that. Now how about these competitors:

Getty Images

Shutterstock

Fotalia

PictureQuest

Mira (“look” in Spanish)

Outside of the realm of stock photos, examples of descriptive names include Quick Oil Change, Shampoo Etcetera, Animal Crackers, Green Home Accessories and Bargain Domains.

Descriptive names do have advantages, but distinctiveness in the eyes and minds of customers is not one of them. The more flatly descriptive a name is, without an unexpected or creative element in it, the more easily it is confused with names of competitors.

Descriptive names are more likely to receive fortuitous search engine traffic, because they include syllables or words potential customers type when searching for a vendor. Normally they’re also easy to pronounce and spell. And with a descriptive name, those who haven’t transacted business with the company before can easily guess what line of work they are in.

On the minus side, descriptive names often cannot be trademarked. They have little cachet. Because the names are dull, they don’t lend themselves to imaginative branding or design. Their descriptiveness can inhibit growth beyond the specifics in the name. And as mentioned, confusion with similarly descriptively named entities is common.

Need some hard evidence that descriptive names don’t necessarily improve popularity? According to Alexa.com, which quantifies and compares traffic to web sites, Veer.com ranks 9,083 in popularity worldwide, while Stockphoto.com has a much lower popularity rank of 235,934. Veer sports a registered trademark, while StockPhoto does not.

So in what circumstances would I recommend descriptive names? First, when you have evidence that business has suffered because of an overly creative name. Second, when you’re a startup and need all the search engine optimization advantages you can muster. And third, when you’re hoping to horn in on a similarly named company’s success, knowing that customers easily confuse descriptive names. (Whether such horning in is an ethical strategy I’ll leave to you to decide!)

New Zealand suicide rate decreases

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

A new report released by the New Zealand Ministry of Health titled “Suicide Trends” shows that the suicide rate in New Zealand has decreased 15% since its peak in the late 1990’s, but the attempted suicide rate is increasing.

There were 12 deaths per 100,000 people between 1983-’85. 16.7 deaths per 100,000 people between 1996-’98. And 14.2 deaths per 100,000 people between 2001-’03. But there were 73.1 attempted suicides per 100,000 people between 1995-’97 compared to 82.5 in 2002-’04.

Jim Anderton, Associate Health Minister, said “It provides some comfort to see the long-term trend still appears to be heading in the right direction, with a continued decline or levelling off of self-inflicted deaths but there is no room for complacency.”

The suicide report also shows that:

 • The 25- to 34-year-old age group has the highest suicide rate
 • Between 2000-’03 Maori has the highest suicide rate
 • Men were less likely than woman to go to hospital for attempted suicide because more men died from suicide.

The New Zealand Government has put NZ$10.3 million towards direct suicide prevention. New Zealand News agencies are banned by law from reporting suicide deaths.

Utah bill requiring divine design education withdrawn by Senator Chris Buttars

Monday, July 18, 2005

Utah Senator Chris Buttars has decided not to introduce a bill requiring the teaching of “divine design” in Utah schools, at least for this year. Buttars withdrew after State Board of Education director Patti Harrington assured him that Utah public school curriculum does not teach that man descended from apes.

Buttars had hoped his divine design proposal would escape the controversy of creationism or intelligent design. “The only people who will be upset about this are atheists,” he stated on June 6 when he announced his intention to run the bill.

Utah is home to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints also known as the Mormon Church. On the surface it would seem Utah would be a likely scene of intense religious pressure in public schools over the teaching of evolution. But unlike states with a strong Christian conservative presence, Utah’s LDS leaders have avoided some of the more contentious separation state and church battles.

On the topic of divine design, official LDS church spokesmen have been largely silent at least in public. But with more than 90% of the legislature made up of members of the LDS faith, few in Utah would deny the influence of the church on public policy.

Groups on both sides of the issue are gearing up for what many consider an inevitable fight. The ACLU of Utah has posted a paper on divine design on its web site (http://www.acluutah.org). The Eagle Forum which wields significant policital power in Utah has expressed its support for Buttars proposed legislation.
