World AIDS Day events held around the globe

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The 20th annual World AIDS Day was December 1, 2007. The theme selected by the World AIDS Campaign is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” as it will be through 2010. The day was marked by thousands of events around the world.

“It is now time for bold leadership at all levels in order to turn the tide of HIV,” said Felicita Hikuam, Global Programmes Manager, World AIDS Campaign. An estimated 33.2 million people around the world—one in every 200—are living with HIV, and approximately 6,800 people are infected with HIV and 5,700 people die of AIDS-related illnesses every day.

“The trend is encouraging but still for every person receiving treatment four others are newly infected,” said Nelson Mandela, speaking at a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. “If we are to stop the Aids epidemic from expanding, we need to break the cycle of new HIV infections. All of us working together with government, communities and civil society can make the difference that is needed,” he continued.

As many as 50,000 people attended the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was telecast around the world. It was organized by Nelson Mandela’s 46664 AIDS campaign and featured performances by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Ludacris, Razorlight, the Goo Goo Dolls and Annie Lennox.File:20050702-Nelson Mandela Live8 Edinburgh.jpg

At a fundraiser in the town of Midrand, in the province Gauteng, near Johannesburg on Friday, singer Annie Lennox had strong words for the South African government’s AIDS policies.

“AIDS, as Madiba [Mandela] has said, is a human rights issue and should be treated as such in order to avoid this genocide that is affecting millions and millions of people around the world,” said Lennox in a speech. Lennox has previously been critical of the South African government’s position on suggesting some AIDS medications were toxic. “It is unacceptable that treatment has not been made available to those who need it most,” said Lennox.

The rock band Queen, which lost its lead singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS, released a new song entitled, Say It’s Not True, to coincide with World Aids Day. It has been made available as a free download from the band’s website. “By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no-one is safe from infection,” said Queen drummer Roger Taylor. “We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love.”

In China, people distributed AIDS prevention brochures in the streets and promoted safe sex in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. In Changsha, official warning signs were put on hotel bedstands. The government announced on Friday an allocation of CNY860 million for AIDS prevention and control. According to official reports, there are estimated to be 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Also in China, the Miss World 2007 was in Sanya on World AIDS Day. The pageant presented a special tribute to the fight against AIDS, with a televised speech from former South African President Nelson Mandela, along with traditional dancers from South Africa who joined the contestants in a special song.

Friday, United States President George W. Bush urged the United States Congress to double the 2003 Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to US$30 billion over the next five years. “Above all, we rededicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” he said.

“I’m pleased to announce that Laura and I will travel to sub-Sahara Africa early next year,” Bush said. Sub-Saharan Africa suffered nearly three-quarters of AIDS-related deaths during 2006 and is home to two-thirds of those living with HIV/AIDS.

Denunciations of Scandals Threaten UN

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Denunciations of corruption, bribe, collection of bribes from refugees [1] and of sexual scandal involving the peacekeepers [2], [3] threaten the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

The gravest denunciations involve the aid project to Iraq, called Oil-for-Food. Grave denunciations of bribe exist, superfluous accounting and collaboration with the ex-dictator Saddam Hussein, against staff of the UN, companies and politicians of several countries. Even the secretary of the UN, Kofi Annan was suspicious of participation in the plan of corruption. And also grave doubts still hover about his son, Kojo Annan.

The gravity of the denunciations threatens not only the credibility of the UN, but its existence.

Secretary Kofi Annan said that he is going to promote reforms in the organization. [4]

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

The Cosmetic Surgery Debate Pros And Cons

The Cosmetic Surgery Debate – Pros and Cons

by

Marcus Crawford

Although plastic surgery is gaining acceptance among people in the United States, people still have strong opinions about the issue. Those that are for plastic surgery say that treatment can boost a person\’s self-confidence and improve overall quality of life. However, those that are against plastic surgery believe that people should not alter their natural bodies. Whether you are for it, against it, or fall somewhere in the middle, people have brought up a number of reasons why people should or shouldn t have plastic surgery.

Pro Arguments for Plastic Surgery

Improves appearance and confidence: Plastic surgery can improve a patient\’s appearance, and along with it, their self esteem. In fact, a number of studies have shown that patient\’s feel happier with themselves and their lives after plastic surgery.

Health benefits: Certain cosmetic surgery procedures offer actual health benefits. For example, rhinoplasty can clear breathing obstructions, breast reduction can alleviate neck and back pain, and upper eyelid surgery can treat obscured vision.

Freedom of choice: Plastic surgery is a personal decision that should be made by the individual. Whether or not others understand or accept that person\’s choice is not their business.

Reconstructive benefits: For patients that have suffered permanent disfigurement in an accident or fire, reconstructive cosmetic surgery can help make them feel comfortable with themselves again. Similarly, patients who were born with birth defects may feel embarrassed about their appearance and be subjected to ridicule. Most people do not consider reconstructive surgery for burn victims, skin cancer patients, and those suffering from cleft palate to be a problem.

Reduce bullying: Children, teens, and even adults are commonly bullied about their appearance. Plastic surgery can address features that detract from a patient\’s appearance and cause them to feel self-conscious about their appearance. Children with big ears or ears that protrude may undergo ear surgery, or otoplasty, to make the ears less prominent. Children and teens with large noses or a bump on the bridge may undergo rhinoplasty surgery to bring it into proportion with the face. Teens with an excess of fat under the chin or in the calves have undergone liposuction surgery to permanently remove these pockets of fat. Males of all ages have undergone male breast reduction surgery for gynecomastia, a condition that results in enlarged male breasts. Women with tubular breasts or severe asymmetry undergo breast augmentation to make the breasts appear normal. In many cases, patients are seeking to have certain features fit in with our cultural norms rather than trying to look like Barbie.

Improve salary: There have been a number of studies in recent years that have shown that more attractive people earn higher salaries. It has long been known that Hollywood types, including actors and models, enhance their appearance to gain more work. Many believe that an improved appearance will get them a better job. Whether this can be attributed to a person\’s looks or improved self-confidence after plastic surgery remains to be seen.

Con Arguments against Plastic Surgery

Immoral: Many people believe that we should not alter, surgically or otherwise, the body that we are born with.

Risk of complications: All surgery, whether medical necessary or elective, carries with it possible health risks. Patients should choose a qualified surgeon to reduce the risk of complications.

Cost: Plastic surgery is costly, and patients could go into debt if they choose to finance their treatment.

Vanity: Plastic surgery can make our culture more vain.

Man remanded in custody after allegedly spraying urine on goods in Gloucestershire, UK

Monday, May 19, 2008

Sahnoun Daifallah, of White City, Gloucester, was today remanded in custody by Cheltenham magistrates after being arrested for spraying a “foul-smelling, brown substance” from a sports bottle. The liquid is thought to have contaminated food, books, wine bottles, and other items across several stores in Gloucestershire.

Mr Daifallah, the court was today told, committed the offences over multiple days. The attack on a Tesco supermarket, where frozen chips and wine bottles were contaminated with what Tesco claims to be a “mix of human urine, faeces, and domestic products” happened on Friday. He is also accused of a similar offence in a Morrisons supermarket 4 miles away on the same day. Two days previously, Mr Daifallah is accused of spraying the substance inside a pub near Cheltenham, contaminating food, and contaminating over 700 books in a Waterstone’s bookstore in nearby Cirencester.

Mr Daifallah today confirmed that he was at the locations stated, however he indicated he will be pleading not guilty to the charges. He has been remanded in custody until May 28th, when he will appear before Stroud magistrates via videolink to be committed to Gloucester Crown Court – a decision made by magistrates after the estimated damage by the defendant was given at over £10,000, plus cleaning and replacement expenses.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/OH-WY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

The closest to luxury one can ever reach is through wearing the latest trends in fashion”adorning themselves with the latest accessories, strutting in the latest trendy shoes, and carrying the latest designs in handbags. Sad to say, all these can be quite expensive, too.

Perhaps the greatest accessory that is sure to get you noticed is the perpetually trendy eyewear! Yes, even some of the latest in eyewear designs haven’t pushed past the expensive mark as yet, especially when you go discount shopping online. Sunglasses are just as important as the ensemble you put together; it gives a better overall impression. Moreover, it gives you an air of mystique. No wonder people have been purchasing specs here and there. The decision to buy is not just random; it has to be considered even to the last detail.

There are a lot of designs that have been coming out with regards to the latest in fashionable eyewear. Let’s start with the shape. The latest designs in eyewear that are en vogue right now are your oversized sunnies. Fashionistas around world have a preference for this type of eyewear design as it shields enough of the eyes and face without hampering your appearance. You should choose wisely because some of these oversized sunnies can be heavy and can rest on your cheeks if they dont rest properly on your ears and nose. Oversized sunnies that have these qualities can be a nuisance and should be avoided as possible.

Another trend that has evolved is the quality of the lenses designers use for their eyewear. Contrary to past trends, lenses now offer the best protection packed in one single pair of spectacles. Lenses now are polarized and can offer ultraviolet protection to varying degrees. These lenses have now been creatively and cleverly manufactured to meet your varying needs. In sports for instance, tennis players now make use of specialized lenses that have yellow enhancements. This is important in tennis as these sunglasses not only shields your eyes from the glare of the sun, but also make the tennis ball more yellow to aid a player in following it wherever it goes. In winter sports, the same technology has been maximized. But rather than yellow enhancements, these sunglasses have amber lenses or rose lenses that can help you effectively see the slopes in the snow. This is crucial, again because it shields the players eyes from the glare of the sun that might hamper their vision. It would also allow athletes to perform at their peak capacity and at the same time be mindful of their safety. For everyday casual wear, you can choose from a variety of dark tinted glasses or those that have no tint at all. However, dark tinted glasses are more often purchased in the retail market. Or, you can even settle for no lenses at all! Yes, the latest and craziest trend in eyewear has just released a new line of sunglasses that have no lenses at all. This type of glasses used to be a trend in the later centuries and now they are back to make a statement. You would have to go to a specialty optical store for these babies, however, because they are usually custom made.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”
