Candidates make campaign stop at trade fairs ahead of 2008 Taiwan Presidential Election

Friday, November 9, 2007

Thursday, November 8, two trade shows, named MEDIPHAR Taipei at the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and Taipei Audio Video Fair at the TWTC and The Grand Hotel, opened in Taipei, Taiwan. Some politicians and government officials chose these events as an opportunity to promote their parties and campaign-coalitions ahead of the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

From the incumbent Pan-Green Coalition, President of the Republic of China Chen Shui-bian, Premier of Republic of China Chang Chun-hsiung, and spokesman for the Executive Yuan Jung-tai Cho visited the two shows successively and were innundated by Taiwanese media. President Chen avoided answering questions on the hot topic of commodities prices, addressing only those about the medical industry development, overseen by Sheng-mao Hou, Minister of Health.

From the Pan-Blue Coalition, 2008 vice-presidential candidate, and former Premier, Vincent Siew participated the opening of the Taipei Audio Video Fair at The Grand Hotel. He criticized on the economy policy and remarked: “The ruling party [DPP] doesn’t have a good track record, and some industries weren’t be supported in timely manner so that they lost some opportunities. I sincerely hope the government can appropriately assist the audio and video industries in marketing good brands and products to the world.”

Also, current Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Shih-chien was invited to give a violin performance and sing a Taiwanese song. The events at the Taipei World Trade Center proved to be quite a platform for the candidates running in the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

South Australia Outback Wilderness Travel

By Laurie McArthur

After several wilderness trips to outback South Australia, Laurie McArthur writes of the preparation necessary to venture, alone, into an environment that will kill you, just for being there, if you don’t look out.

Traveling on an ATV (quadbike or four wheel motorbike), Laurie has traveled hundreds of kilometres around the Arid Region, west of Lake Torrens, in South Australia, camping and photographing the harsh wilderness landscape as he goes.

Ownership of the Land

About 70% of South Australia is pastoral lease. The land is owned by the South Australian government and leased, long term, to pastoralists for sheep and cattle grazing, and to mining companies for exploration and mining operations.

If you look at a regular road map of outback South Australia, the roads marked are public roads and you are free to travel these outback roads through the arid wilderness country as you would any other country road. Exceptions are national parks and Aboriginal land. But they are another two stories.

However, the extra roads and tracks marked on a topographic map of outback South Australia, are station owned and maintained. Whether there is a gate or not, you must have permission from the station manager to travel on these outback roads and tracks.

Moreover, if you approach the outback station manager with appropriate courtesy, he’ll more than likely give you invaluable local knowledge. You see, there are outback tracks marked on the best topographic maps that don’t exist, and visa versa. There are outback tracks that are so washed out as to be impassable. Some lines on the topographic map, marked as outback station tracks, will be found to be just an old, tumbled down fence line that you might be able to follow on a horse. Still other outback tracks might cross a dry salt lake for say, 10 kilometres, with the mud being firm enough to hold a vehicle only after a dry spell of many years.

Permission to Travel on Pastoral Leases

1) Contact Mapland at http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/mapland/contact.html#Offices and purchase a large map of South Australia showing all the pastoral leases and their names. Then identify which pastoral leases you wish to travel on.

2) Contact Outback SA, Level 6, 101 Grenfell St., ADELAIDE SA 5000 or telephone 1 800 678 477 for a list of Pastoral Leases.

3) Contact the relevant pastoral lessee(s) by telephone or letter, well in advance of your proposed trip. They may refuse permission for a range of good reasons including stock management and road conditions.

You should make allowance for some of these folk not being highly oriented toward office work. But generally speaking, once you develop a rapport with them, they’ll be most supportive.

It’s important to keep in mind that the roll of the pastoralists on the outback land is to run stock. They are not there as an extension of the tourist industry and cannot be expected to bail you out should you get into difficulties on their station.

Navigation

The South Australian outback is vast and unforgiving, so be well prepared to navigate your way reliably through the Arid Region.

1) Maps. You must have a paper road map and a paper topographic map of the outback area you will be traveling. Never rely entirely on a GPS, no matter how sophisticated a model it is.

2) Compass An inexpensive pocket compass will do to orientate the topographic map or the road map.

3) GPS With a hand held or vehicle mounted GPS you’ll know where you are on the map to an accuracy of about five metres. An entry level GPS used in conjunction with a paper map will be quite adequate to find your way around the South Australian outback. More sophisticated models display a moving map on the screen.

4) Bush Sense Be aware of where the sun and the moon rise and set at the particular time of year and how far to the north the sun will be at noon. Both the sun and the moon move toward the north in winter. Take note of the prevailing winds and the direction of the parallel sand dunes.

5) Study the Maps Well before the trip, become familiar with the South Australian outback country you’ll be traveling. Know the features such as hills, wells and dams, homesteads, lakes, creek beds and main roads as well as tracks. Google Earth is a great resource for getting to know the outback in advance.

Communication There’s no reason for ill prepared outback travelers who become stranded, to die of dehydration, in these modern days of satellite communication. All South Australian outback travelers should have a satellite phone.

About the Author: Would you like to read about Laurie’s South Australian outback trip of August 2006? In his ATV Camping Trip website, southimage.net/atvcamptrip/, Laurie tells many stories, illustrated with his digital images, about his travels on Bosworth and Andamooka stations, west of Lake Torrens.

Western New York prepares for ice storm

Saturday, January 13, 2007

Western New York is preparing for what some forecasters are saying to be a major ice storm.

The NOAA has issued several warnings for Western New York which begin at 7:00 p.m. [EST] on Saturday and continue into Monday January 15, 2007.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for tonight and Sunday Morning for the “potential of heavy amounts” of ice, sleet and snow and has the potential to become “dangerous.” The advisory is set to expire at 8:00 a.m. [EST] on Sunday morning.

“Light freezing rain and freezing drizzle is expected to begin after midnight tonight and continue into Sunday morning. Precipitation amounts are expected to be very light; however, it does not take much freezing rain to make untreated surfaces slippery,” said the advisory on the NOAA’s website.

“It [the freezing rain] is not expected to be heavy enough to cause tree or power problems,” added the statement.

On Sunday night and Monday, “a wintery mix of precipitation with the potential for heavy amounts is expected Sunday night into Monday. This event has the potential to be much more significant than the precipitation tonight and Sunday morning. Heavy accumulations of snow, sleet or freezing rain are possible, which could lead to significant travel problems and utility outages caused by downed powerlines and poles,” said a statement on the NOAA’s website.

Although warnings and watches are posted, the NOAA says that the track of the storm is still “uncertain.”

“There is still a good deal of uncertainty” as to the track of the storm, “but this storm has the potential to become dangerous,” added the statement.

The same storm has caused more than 125,000 people to lose power near St. Louis, Missouri and power officials say that they are “still losing people,” said Springfield’s City Utilities spokesman, Ern DeCamp.

At least 6 people have been killed due to the storm around the Midwest and has caused schools and flights from and to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport in Missouri and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas to be cancelled. 25,000 people in Oklahoma are still without power.

An emergency proclamation has been issued by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in California after below freezing temperatures caused “conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property.”

Friday, May 6, 2005

According to an TNS NIPO survey published today, a 68% majority of the Dutch agrees with the position that the Balkenende government is behaving itself as the “lap dog” (“schoothondje“) of the United States.

The survey also stated 79% find that US President Bush overly pressures other countries to become and stay allies to the US. Over 70% agreed Europe should attempt to counterbalance the US, while 56% of the participants in the survey agree that Bush is a danger for world peace.

The survey was released the night before a Bush visit to the Netherlands.

How To Shake The Winter Blues By Raising A Red Eared Slider Turtle As A Pet

By Robert Benjamin

Probably most kids at one time or another have had a turtle of some type as a pet. Turtles are fun and fascinating and most species of them are fairly easy to keep as pets. When I was a youngster I had numerous turtles as pets, some of the ones I had were; mud turtles, wood turtles, painted turtles, red eared sliders and soft shelled turtles.

Most of the turtles I had as pets were found in the wild, and I only kept them for a few days, then turned them loose. The ones I had as long time pets were the; Red Eared Sliders and the Soft Shelled Turtles, which I bought in pet stores.

One of the hardiest and favorite turtles to keep as a long term pet, is the Red Eared Slider. These are the turtles that most pet stores sell, although I have seen painted turtles and other species for sale in some stores, over the years. Before you decide on getting a red eared slider turtle, or a few of them, make sure you examine it closely for signs of sickness, such as; cloudy eyes, cracked or damaged shells, not moving or acting very lethargic for a turtle, growths or sores on it’s legs or other body parts.

If you do decide to get two or more turtles, remember that red eared sliders will increase in size. My Daughter bought 4 of them a couple years ago, when she bought them they were not much bigger then quarters, and they all lived fine in one of them plastic oval shaped turtle aquariums that have the little plastic palm tree. Now, her turtles require a 10 gallon fish aquarium to move around in freely, and they will soon need an even larger home.

Your turtles home will need enough water in the bottom of it to cover it’s shell entirely, when the turtle decides to be submerged, but you should also place some large flat rocks in one area, so your turtle can easily climb out to dry off, and sit when it wants to. If your aquarium is large enough you can even add a large tree limb or log for your turtles to crawl and set on. One word of warning, turtles can give you a nasty pinch when they bite, and as they get larger they can possibly even bite a child’s finger off, so be careful, and avoid sticking a finger near the turtles head.

Once in awhile you will need to clean your turtles shell, as they tend to get covered with algae. Simply hold your turtle under some slow moving water, and gently scrub it’s shell with a toothbrush. You may wish to purchase a product called; ‘ Tetra – Vitashell ‘, which is a deep-penetrating, turtle skin and shell conditioning cream, that you can apply with your hands to your turtles shell and body parts, this is a great product that I buy for my Daughter, to apply to her turtles after washing them.

Your turtle can live fine on the normal turtle food sticks and any other turtle treats you want to buy for them in pet stores. Make sure you keep your turtles home cleaned as often as possible, as turtles tend to dirty their water and home pretty rapidly, and in a short time they can stink really bad. Taking good care of your turtle, can give you a pet that will possibly last for many years, and it will give you something to do to help shake the winter blues.

There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities – and it may be found at this url: http://www.winter-activities.com

British Gas to increase electricity, gas prices

Sunday, July 10, 2011

British-based utility company Centrica, which holds ownership of British Gas, has announced its intentions to increase the prices of domestic electricity and gas later this year. On August 18, 2011, the company plans to raise the costs of gas and electrical supplies by eighteen and sixteen per cent, respectively. According to The Guardian, nine million customers will be affected by these changes.

British price comparison website uSwitch has reported that the “[a]verage household bill for a dual fuel British Gas customer will now go up from £1,096 to £1,288”. Mike O’Connor, the chief executive officer of consumer organisation Consumer Focus, has claimed that the announcement “will send a shock wave across the country” and will place an increasing amount of difficulties “on stretched household budgets. Consumers […] rightly question whether prices are fair.”

Phil Bentley, a managing director for British Gas, has claimed that value increases like this are “an issue facing all energy suppliers”. A director for British Gas, named Ian Peters, has claimed that “a fair return” will be made after the changes occur.

In 2010, British Gas experienced its largest ever profit, making £742 million (US$1,192 million, €835 million). Meanwhile, Centrica achieved £2.4 billion (US$3.8 billion, €2.7 billion) in profits. Richard Lloyd from product sampling charity Which? criticised the decision to raise prices, calling the declaration “unwelcome but unsurprising” for British Gas consumers.

Previously in December 2010, British Gas increased the price of its gas by 6.9%, which equates to £43 (US$69, €48). At the same time, the company’s electricity prices were raised by 6.7%, or £28 (US$45, €32). On Friday, Chris Huhne, the secretary of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, said that British electricity businesses must modify themselves so as to avoid “the cycle of fossil fuel addiction. Alternatives like renewables and nuclear power must be allowed to become the dominant component of our energy mix,” said Huhne.

This news comes to light as Scottish Power, a rival energy company to British Gas, announced last month their intentions to up the prices of their electricity and gas supplies by ten and nineteen per cent respectively.

Israel Journal: Is Yossi Vardi a good father to his entrepreneurial children?

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone is currently, courtesy of the Israeli government and friends, visiting Israel. This is a first-hand account of his experiences and may — as a result — not fully comply with Wikinews’ neutrality policy. Please note this is a journalism experiment for Wikinews and put constructive criticism on the collaboration page.

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Dr. Yossi Vardi is known as Israel’s ‘Father of the Entrepreneur’, and he has many children in the form of technology companies he has helped to incubate in Tel Aviv‘s booming Internet sector. At the offices of Superna, one such company, he introduced a whirlwind of presentations from his baby incubators to a group of journalists. What stuck most in my head was when Vardi said, “What is important is not the technology, but the talent.” Perhaps because he repeated this after each young Internet entrepreneur showed us his or her latest creation under Vardi’s tutelage. I had a sense of déjà vu from this mantra. A casual reader of the newspapers during the Dot.com boom will remember a glut of stories that could be called “The Rise of the Failure”; people whose technology companies had collapsed were suddenly hot commodities to start up new companies. This seemingly paradoxical thinking was talked about as new back then; but even Thomas Edison—the Father of Invention—is oft-quoted for saying, “I have not failed. I have just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.”

Vardi’s focus on encouraging his brood of talent regardless of the practicalities stuck out to me because of a recent pair of “dueling studies” The New York Times has printed. These are the sort of studies that confuse parents on how to raise their kids. The first, by Carol Dweck at Stanford University, came to the conclusion that children who are not praised for their efforts, regardless of the outcome’s success, rarely attempt more challenging and complex pursuits. According to Dweck’s study, when a child knows that they will receive praise for being right instead of for tackling difficult problems, even if they fail, they will simply elect to take on easy tasks in which they are assured of finding the solution.

Only one month earlier the Times produced another story for parents to agonize over, this time based on a study from the Brookings Institution, entitled “Are Kids Getting Too Much Praise?” Unlike Dweck’s clinical study, Brookings drew conclusions from statistical data that could be influenced by a variety of factors (since there was no clinical control). The study found American kids are far more confident that they have done well than their Korean counterparts, even when the inverse is true. The Times adds in the words of a Harvard faculty psychologist who intoned, “Self-esteem is based on real accomplishments. It’s all about letting kids shine in a realistic way.” But this is not the first time the self-esteem generation’s proponents have been criticized.

Vardi clearly would find himself encouraged by Dweck’s study, though, based upon how often he seemed to ask us to keep our eyes on the people more than the products. That’s not to say he has not found his latest ICQ, though only time—and consumers—will tell.

For a Web 2.User like myself, I was most fascinated by Fixya, a site that, like Wikipedia, exists on the free work of people with knowledge. Fixya is a tech support site where people who are having problems with equipment ask a question and it is answered by registered “experts.” These experts are the equivalent of Wikipedia’s editors: they are self-ordained purveyors of solutions. But instead of solving a mystery of knowledge a reader has in their head, these experts solve a problem related to something you have bought and do not understand. From baby cribs to cellular phones, over 500,000 products are “supported” on Fixya’s website. The Fixya business model relies upon the good will of its experts to want to help other people through the ever-expanding world of consumer appliances. But it is different from Wikipedia in two important ways. First, Fixya is for-profit. The altruistic exchange of information is somewhat dampened by the knowledge that somebody, somewhere, is profiting from whatever you give. Second, with Wikipedia it is very easy for a person to type in a few sentences about a subject on an article about the Toshiba Satellite laptop, but to answer technical problems a person is experiencing seems like a different realm. But is it? “It’s a beautiful thing. People really want to help other people,” said the presenter, who marveled at the community that has already developed on Fixya. “Another difference from Wikipedia is that we have a premium content version of the site.” Their premium site is where they envision making their money. Customers with a problem will assign a dollar amount based upon how badly they need an answer to a question, and the expert-editors of Fixya will share in the payment for the resolved issue. Like Wikipedia, reputation is paramount to Fixya’s experts. Whereas Wikipedia editors are judged by how they are perceived in the Wiki community, the amount of barnstars they receive and by the value of their contributions, Fixya’s customers rate its experts based upon the usefulness of their advice. The site is currently working on offering extended warranties with some manufacturers, although it was not clear how that would work on a site that functioned on the work of any expert.

Another collaborative effort product presented to us was YouFig, which is software designed to allow a group of people to collaborate on work product. This is not a new idea, although may web-based products have generally fallen flat. The idea is that people who are working on a multi-media project can combine efforts to create a final product. They envision their initial market to be academia, but one could see the product stretching to fields such as law, where large litigation projects with high-level of collaboration on both document creation and media presentation; in business, where software aimed at product development has generally not lived up to its promises; and in the science and engineering fields, where multi-media collaboration is quickly becoming not only the norm, but a necessity.

For the popular consumer market, Superna, whose offices hosted our meeting, demonstrated their cost-saving vision for the Smart Home (SH). Current SH systems require a large, expensive server in order to coordinate all the electronic appliances in today’s air-conditioned, lit and entertainment-saturated house. Such coordinating servers can cost upwards of US$5,000, whereas Superna’s software can turn a US$1,000 hand-held tablet PC into household remote control.

There were a few start-ups where Vardi’s fatherly mentoring seemed more at play than long-term practical business modeling. In the hot market of WiFi products, WeFi is software that will allow groups of users, such as friends, share knowledge about the location of free Internet WiFi access, and also provide codes and keys for certain hot spots, with access provided only to the trusted users within a group. The mock-up that was shown to us had a Google Maps-esque city block that had green points to the known hot spots that are available either for free (such as those owned by good Samaritans who do not secure their WiFi access) or for pay, with access information provided for that location. I saw two long-term problems: first, WiMAX, which is able to provide Internet access to people for miles within its range. There is already discussion all over the Internet as to whether this technology will eventually make WiFi obsolete, negating the need to find “hot spots” for a group of friends. Taiwan is already testing an island-wide WiMAX project. The second problem is if good Samaritans are more easily located, instead of just happened-upon, how many will keep their WiFi access free? It has already become more difficult to find people willing to contribute to free Internet. Even in Tel Aviv, and elsewhere, I have come across several secure wireless users who named their network “Fuck Off” in an in-your-face message to freeloaders.

Another child of Vardi’s that the Brookings Institution might say was over-praised for self-esteem but lacking real accomplishment is AtlasCT, although reportedly Nokia offered to pay US$8.1 million for the software, which they turned down. It is again a map-based software that allows user-generated photographs to be uploaded to personalized street maps that they can share with friends, students, colleagues or whomever else wants to view a person’s slideshow from their vacation to Paris (“Dude, go to the icon over Boulevard Montmartre and you’ll see this girl I thought was hot outside the Hard Rock Cafe!”) Aside from the idea that many people probably have little interest in looking at the photo journey of someone they know (“You can see how I traced the steps of Jesus in the Galilee“), it is also easy to imagine Google coming out with its own freeware that would instantly trump this program. Although one can see an e-classroom in architecture employing such software to allow students to take a walking tour through Rome, its desirability may be limited.

Whether Vardi is a smart parent for his encouragement, or in fact propping up laggards, is something only time will tell him as he attempts to bring these products of his children to market. The look of awe that came across each company’s representative whenever he entered the room provided the answer to the question of Who’s your daddy?
