BP says Gulf oil spill slowed as estimates of oil spilled increase

Thursday, May 27, 2010

A US Coast Guard official said today that BP’s latest effort to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been successful in slowing the amount of oil leaking from the well.

The official, Admiral Thad Allen, said that the procedure, known as a “top kill” operation, has been able to block some of the leaking oil at the source, the top of the damaged well. The operation involves pumping material into the well to plug the leak before cement is used to permanently seal the leak. Allen said the operation has “been able to force mud down and not allow any hydrocarbons to come up.”

BP hasn’t confirmed the success of the top kill operation, saying only that the “operation is proceeding as we planned it,” and that there had been no major incidents thus far. Although the possibility of failure is still present, experts say that the longer the procedure continues, the less likely it will be that anything goes wrong.

The procedure began yesterday afternoon, after diagnostics on the damaged equipment on the ocean’s surface indicated that it could withstand the added pressure of the mud being pumped into the well. Although engineers involved with the operation wore concerned that the pressure of the mud might not be able to overcome that of the oil, that has thus far not been the case.

Separately, a group of US scientists announced new estimates of how much oil was flowing from the well, ranging from 12,000 to 25,000 barrels a day, far higher than BP’s original estimate of 5,000 barrels a day, a figure which BP warned was possibly inaccurate.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, US president Barack Obama also announced new measures in response to the spill, which include:

  • Suspending off-shore test drilling for six months
  • Extending the moratorium on issuing drilling permits for an additional six months
  • Cancelling the sale of leases for off-shore drilling.

In statements, Obama criticized the “scandalously close relationship” between government officials and oil companies in the past, saying that the Mineral Management Service, which is the agency responsible for monitoring off-shore drilling, had been corrupt for years.

Bucharest to be ‘rebranded’ for 800 million euro

Wednesday, March 2, 2005

Bucharest, Romania — The city centre of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is set to get a major facelift due to a real estate project called Esplanada (The Esplanade), which will be constructed by TriGranit Development Corporation. The total investment in the project will be greater than 800 million euro and aims to build a modern commercial pedestrian area in downtown Bucharest, with several shopping malls, office buildings, hotels and dwellings. It will be the largest real estate program in Romania since the fall of Communism in 1989.

Bucharest is currently looking at possibilities to improve its appearance and rebrand itself as a lively, creative and vibrant city. Many initiatives have sprung up to improve the city, including the organisation of CowParade later this year. Additionally, the old town centre will be restored. Due to Romania’s current economic boom, several other major construction projects are taking place.

Bucharest City Hall has blocked traffic in the city center due both to the old town restoration and to the Esplanada project.

Wedding Photography Photos Of Your Little Girl In The Wedding Entourage

Submitted by: Juhlin Youlein

You wife has emailed you that your little girl will be a flower girl in her sister s wedding at the end of the month. You are now working in an Asian country doing big construction projects for your company, which has cornered the big jobs out there from one of the leading food manufacturing and processing companies in that country. You have been out in the field for almost a year now, and you have not gone home for a visit with the family yet since you left them last year. This time when your little girl will be joining a bridal entourage as a flower girl, would be a good occasion to take a break from your foreign job even for just two weeks.

You have been eyeing that digital camera in one of the online stores back home for sometime because a friend of yours now in the construction project says it is a most convenient tool to record family events. Now you can order and pay for it online and have the item delivered to your home to surprise your wife. You expect a call from her by the time she gets the digital camera delivered at your door, asking what the camera is all about; and that will be tine you will let her know that you are coming home for the wedding ceremony because you will take the pictures of your little girl yourself. You can kid her that you have found an extra job with a wedding photography firm and that will be your first assignment in your new career.

Your wife of course will be too happy with your coming for your first visit since you took on the construction job abroad. She will not be able to catch your joke that you have now become a wedding photography camera operator. She could not get the joke that the photography job is very different from your line of work as a civil engineer, all because she is just too excited with your first homecoming. She knows it will be another honeymoon for both of you.

You have to ask your friend now in the foreign job with you to give you extra instructions on how to operate the digital camera you have asked to be delivered to your home ahead of your homecoming, because you would not know how to operate it on the day of the wedding. Your buddy will of course be just too glad to help you learn how to take pictures with your new digital camera, assuring you that the gadget is quite easy and simple to operate. He says that the new electronic gadgets now like the digital camera are indeed user-friendly that even a kid can operate them with ease. He is quite sure that you will be doing your taking of the photos of your flower girl just like one of the pros in the wedding photography group covering the event.

IMF approves US$1.13 billion loan to Pakistan

Saturday, May 15, 2010

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said yesterday that its board has approved a loan package worth US$1.13 billion to be granted to Pakistan.

The move came after the IMF reviewed Pakistan’s economic performance with a standby arrangement worth $11.3 billion aimed at improving the country’s balance of payments. According to a statement by the fund, disbursements have reached $7.27 billion from the plan.

The IMF described Pakistan’s economic situation as having improved in spite of “adverse security developments and a rapidly changing political environment”, although saying the economy was still vulnerable.

The board also noted that it would grant waivers for several performance criteria Pakistan did not meet, namely overrunning the budget deficit and surpassing State Bank of Pakistan borrowing limits.

Pakistan requested a bailout package two years ago from the IMF, as it was struggling with three-decade-high inflation rates; the country has also seen much violence from rebel groups, with bombings having killed over 3,200 people since July of 2007.

The Raveonettes on love, death, desire and war

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

“We’re only two days in and we’re already fucking tired,” says Sune Rose Wagner to David Shankbone as he walks into the dressing room at the Bowery Ballroom. Wagner and Sharin Foo comprise the Raveonettes, a group made for “nostalgists who long for Everly Brothers 45’s and diner jukeboxes, the Raveonettes tweak “American Graffiti”-era rock with fuzzed-out surf-guitar riffs,” said The New York Times. They recently left Columbia and signed with Fierce Panda because they felt constrained by their Columbia contract: “The major label system sometimes doesn’t allow for outside “help” to get involved, meaning that we don’t get to choose who we wanna work with. That can be a pretty terrible thing and bad things will surely come of it,” said the band on their MySpace site. Originally from Denmark, both musicians live in the United States now.

Their first EP, Chain Gang of Love, was a critical and commercial success. “Few albums provoke such amazing imagery,” said the BBC. “Pretty in Black is virtually fuzz-free,” said Rolling Stone of their next album, “highlighting the exquisite detail in the Raveonettes’ gift for pastiche: the prowling, garage-surf guitars in Love in a Trashcan; the ghost dance of Red Tan, wrapped in Phil Spector-style sleigh bells.” Of their current album, Lust Lust Lust, set to be released on November 5th (although Amazon says March 4, 2008), Sune told NME that, “There are a lot of songs that deal with desire, restlessness and the tough choices you have to make sometimes.” Fans can hear some of the new material at MySpace.com/TheRaveonettes.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo.

All About Tca Antidepressant Drugs

All About TCA Antidepressant Drugs

by

Michael Harrah

TriCyclic Antidepressants or TCA are a group of drugs that assist in balancing the chemicals in the neurotransmitter. These chemicals are being used by the nerve cells and it is the TCA that aids in increasing norepinephrine and serotonin levels. Furthermore, this drug type blocks out acetylcholine. By doing all these, the balance of chemicals in your brain alleviates your disposition and attention. TCA antidepressants, although frequently prescribed are usually not the first treatment option when treating depression. Compared to other antidepressants, TCA is relatively secure and fast acting, but it is not without its side effects. These after effects vary and it may hinder the patient’s convenience.

For instance, Elavil is an effective antidepressant that blocks acetylcholine but in the process creates constipation problems for certain patients. TCA antidepressants are not advisable for patients who have seizures, heart conditions and glaucoma. Children and teenagers have experienced suicidal tendencies with the use of these drugs too. Other milder side effects associated with the use of TCA include erratic weight changes, blurred vision, low blood pressure, dry mouth, rash, constipation, palpitations, and drowsiness. Plus, studies have shown that majority of the antidepressant drugs in the market cause impotence. There are some drugs that are not just compatible with TCA. If you’re taking TCA antidepressants, you should altogether avoid the following drugs: epinephrine, MAOI, clonidine, and cimetadine. If you have taken any of these drugs together with TCA, the worst thing that could happen to you is high blood pressure that leads to stroke. During TCA treatment it’s also good to avoid any alcohol beverage. Aside from depression, TCA antidepressants are also used to treat panic disorder, bedwetting, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraine, bulimia, PMS, and severe and recurring pain. However, you should also be aware that some of the uses of TCA antidepressants are not approved by the USFDA.

With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

Founder of UK sports car manufacturer TVR dies in Spain

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Trevor Wilkinson, who founded the UK performance car manufacturer TVR has died at his home in Minorca, Spain. He was 85.

Wilkinson, from Blackpool, left education at 14, getting an apprenticeship at a local garage. In 1946 he bought a local wheelwright’s business, which he renamed Trevcar Motors, which sold and repaired cars, as well as undertaking light engineering work.

He built his first car the following year. It was a two-seater based on an Alvis Firebird chassis for his own use. He then formed TVR Engineering, the name derived from his own – TreVoR. The first TVR was unveiled in 1949. It was a two-seater with an alloy body and a multi-tubular steel chassis.

The first production TVR was initially called simply the ‘Mark I’, but became known as the Grantura. This M-type glass fibre bodied car was to remain in production, in a modified form, until 1980, when it was replaced by the Tasmin, which had an angular wedge design.

Wilkinson himself left TVR in 1962 to form another engineering business, which specialised in glass fibre construction. He moved to Minorca after retiring.

The TVR Car Club website announced yesterday that he had died in Spain. The news was confirmed by a spokeswoman for Minorca’s Mateu Orfila Hospital. According to the TVR Car Club’s site “He was aware of the serious nature of his final illness but, according to a friend, took it in stoical fashion that was typical of the man.”

British government considering new nuclear power stations

April 24, 2005

Advisers to British Prime Minister Tony Blair are suggesting that constructing new nuclear power stations would be the best way to meet the country’s targets on reducing emissions of gases responsible for global warming.

The government has a near-term target of cutting emissions below 1997 levels by 20%, and a more ambitious target of a 60% cut by 2050.Critics of nuclear power say that it will not be able to help meet the 2010 target due to the length of time needed to plan, construct and commission such power plants. However backers say nuclear power will help meet the 60% cut by 2050 target.

Sir David King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the government, is a supporter of nuclear power believing that it is the best way to tackle global warming.

The chairman of British Nuclear Fuels, a company that operates several British nuclear reactors, said that he expects Tony Blair to make an announcement of new power stations within weeks of the May 5 general election if he is re-elected.

Another primary supporter of nuclear power is the ex-BBC Director General Lord Birt, who has been advising 10 Downing Street on various issues by providing ‘blue-sky’ thinking without payment, as part of the Strategy Unit. He is said to be preparing a report that will say nuclear energy provides an opportunity to reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil supplies (although very little oil is burnt for electricity production in the UK).

While it is believed that senior Cabinet members would not oppose a plan for new nuclear power stations if Tony Blair proposed it, the Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett and Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt both oppose nuclear power.

New reactors would probably be sited next to existing reactors to limit public opposition.

Nuclear power currently provides 22% of the UK’s electricity needs. The UK has 31 operating reactors at 14 power plants, but by 2015 all but three stations will have been shut down. The last nuclear reactor to open was Sizewell B on the North Sea coast in 1995. The 1,188MW station was a large reason why the UK met its carbon dioxide emissions reduction target in the 1990s. British nuclear power stations have created 2,000 cubic metres of nuclear waste. There are currently no plans for the long-term storage of the waste.

By comparison, just over 3% of Britain’s electricity comes from renewable energy. France met 78% of its electricity needs in 2002 using nuclear power.
